As Nigeria intensifies efforts to reduce maternal mortality, TAConnect joined national stakeholders in supporting the review of the country’s guidelines for the prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), one of the leading causes of maternal deaths.
The technical review meeting, convened by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare at BON Octagon Abuja, brought together experts and partners to review the zero drafts of the revised National Postpartum Hemorrhage Guidelines, Training Manual, and accompanying training materials ahead of a broader stakeholder validation meeting.
The review follows the release of the updated World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations on the prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage, which provide the latest global evidence to improve the quality of maternal healthcare. Updating Nigeria’s national guidance is a critical step toward ensuring that healthcare workers across the country are equipped with current, evidence-based practices to prevent and manage obstetric emergencies effectively.
During the meeting, participants examined the draft documents to ensure they align with international best practices while remaining responsive to Nigeria’s health system realities. Discussions focused on strengthening clinical guidance, improving the quality of training resources, and ensuring consistency in the delivery of postpartum hemorrhage interventions across all levels of care.
TAConnect’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting evidence-informed policy development and strengthening PHC systems through technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge exchange. By contributing technical perspectives during the review process, TAConnect continues to support national efforts to improve the quality of maternal healthcare and accelerate progress toward reducing preventable maternal deaths.
As the revised guidelines move through stakeholder validation and eventual implementation, they are expected to strengthen the capacity of healthcare providers to deliver timely, standardized, and high-quality postpartum hemorrhage care. This represents another important milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward safer childbirth and improved maternal health outcomes, while reinforcing the value of collaborative partnerships in translating global evidence into national action.
