TAConnect Strengthens Maternal Health Systems in Kaduna State

TAConnect’s Kaduna State team advanced its maternal and newborn health systems strengthening work through a round of monitoring and mentoring visits and maternal death surveillance engagements across supported Local Government Areas. The visits focused on improving the quality of service delivery and strengthening the capacity of frontline providers, with particular attention to the prevention and management of postpartum haemorrhage, one of the leading causes of maternal death in Nigeria.

The team also took part in Community Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (cMPDSR) activities and contributed to the state-level MAMII Taskforce review. Drawing on findings from maternal death reviews, the engagements helped highlight the key drivers of maternal mortality, including delays in seeking and reaching care, and informed practical actions to close those gaps.

TAConnect worked with state and community stakeholders to strengthen the linkages between communities and health facilities, promoting timely referrals, better identification and follow-up of pregnant women, and greater uptake of facility-based deliveries. These measures connect surveillance learning directly to service delivery improvements, ensuring that lessons from each review translate into stronger systems on the ground.

By combining data-driven surveillance, community engagement, and clinical capacity strengthening, TAConnect is helping to build a more responsive and accountable health system in Kaduna State, one better equipped to detect risks early, act quickly, and ultimately save the lives of mothers and newborns.
