TAConnect and Kaduna State Government Strengthen Maternal Care Through PPH Bundle Training

As part of ongoing efforts to accelerate the reduction of maternal mortality in Nigeria, TAConnect, working in collaboration with the Kaduna State Government, conducted a three-day facility-based training and mentorship intervention focused on the Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) EMOTIVE bundle of care across selected health facilities in Chikun, Makarfi, Kudan, and Zaria Local Government Areas.

Postpartum haemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality globally and in Nigeria, accounting for a significant proportion of preventable deaths during childbirth. Strengthening the capacity of skilled birth attendants (SBAs) to rapidly recognize and effectively manage PPH is therefore central to improving maternal survival outcomes.

As part of this intervention, 17 selected retired nurses and midwives were trained as LGA-level mentors on the PPH/E-MOTIVE bundle of care. The strategy is designed to strengthen supportive supervision and on-the-job mentoring for frontline health workers across the 7 MAMII LGAs implementing maternal and newborn health innovations in Kaduna State. By leveraging experienced retired health professionals, the approach reinforces sustainability, local ownership, and continuous quality improvement within the health system.

Following the training, the mentorship teams conducted structured supportive supervision across 23 health facilities, including three secondary facilities and 21 primary healthcare centres. During these visits, a standardized mentoring checklist was administered to assess clinical competence, commodity availability, and overall service delivery readiness among skilled birth attendants.

The exercise enabled real-time identification of critical gaps, including clinical skill deficiencies, stock availability challenges, and system-level constraints affecting the quality of maternal care. These gaps were immediately addressed through hands-on mentoring, with a focus on improving adherence to the E-MOTIVE PPH bundle, strengthening obstetric emergency response, thereby reducing delays in recognition and management of life-threatening complications..

Importantly, the intervention reflects strong synergy between TAConnect and the Kaduna State Government in advancing the implementation of MNH innovations under the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII). By aligning technical assistance with state leadership and leveraging experienced health professionals, the partnership is reinforcing a sustainable model for improving maternal health outcomes.

This initiative underscores TAConnect’s broader effort to strengthen health systems not only through training but through sustained mentorship, supportive supervision, and system-level capacity building that ensures quality care is consistently delivered where it matters most, at the points of service.
