Scaling Lifesaving Maternal Care: TAConnect Empowers Frontline Workers to Manage PPH Effectively

As part of its ongoing commitment to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes, TAConnect is strengthening the capacity of frontline health workers across supported states in Nigeria to prevent and manage postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), one of the leading causes of maternal deaths. Working in collaboration with the state governments and partners, TAConnect has deepened support in Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Yobe States, linking capacity building with stronger data systems and evidence-based decision-making.

Across the four states, the interventions focused on equipping health workers with the skills and confidence to respond effectively to PPH emergencies while improving data quality for maternal health planning. In Kaduna, 30 facilitators, including PPH trainers and M&E officers, were trained to strengthen data documentation and management. The sessions, led by TAConnect’s Monitoring and Evaluation team, emphasized accuracy, consistency, and the use of high-quality data to improve maternal outcomes, with participants now cascading the knowledge to health facilities across the state.

Building on this momentum, Bauchi adopted a decentralized, low-dose, high-frequency training model that brought learning directly to the point of care. Through mentorship and practical demonstrations, 30 master trainers and 22 skilled birth attendants in Itas, Gadau, Katagum, and Misau LGAs enhanced their skills in active management of labour, blood loss estimation, and use of Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments (NASG). The approach fostered hands-on learning and strengthened the link between quality service delivery and data integrity.

In Borno, TAConnect combined capacity building with digital innovation and data system strengthening during a week-long engagement that included refresher sessions for 37 facilitators and cascade trainings across five PHC facilities in Maiduguri. Health workers were trained on the WHO E-MOTIVE bundle, respectful maternity care, and accurate documentation using revised MNH registers. The sessions also helped identify operational challenges such as supply shortages and delayed referrals, providing actionable insights for improving maternal care delivery.

Similarly, in Yobe State, TAConnect collaborated with the State Primary Health Care Board to train a new cohort of state-level trainers on the E-MOTIVE PPH bundle. The training featured emergency simulations and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) that enhanced clinical coordination, teamwork, and communication. Participants, including doctors, nurses, and midwives, demonstrated significant improvement in their ability to manage obstetric emergencies, with many describing the exposure to lifesaving interventions like Tranexamic Acid and Heat-Stable Carbetocin as transformative.

Through these coordinated interventions, TAConnect is helping states institutionalize sustainable models that link learning to practice and data to action. From Kaduna’s data-driven foundation to Bauchi’s onsite mentorship, Borno’s digital engagement, and Yobe’s clinical innovation, the results converge toward one goal: stronger systems, safer deliveries, and healthier communities. By empowering health workers and reinforcing state systems, TAConnect continues to build a future where no woman dies while giving life.
