As World Immunization Week 2025 (April 24–30) concludes, TAConnect has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing equitable access to immunization in Nigeria, with a strategic focus on underserved communities in Kano State.
TAConnect is currently implementing the Global Health Innovation Grant (GHIG8) from the Pfizer Foundation in Kano State, building on the success of its earlier intervention (GHIG7), which aimed to improve rotavirus vaccination in high-burden local government areas (LGAs).
The ongoing project, titled “Accelerating Vaccination Uptake in Children Under Two Years in Selected Zero-Dose LGAs in Kano State,” is being executed in collaboration with the Kano State Government across 90 health facilities in 15 LGAs: Bebeji, Danbatta, Dawakin Kudu, Dawakin Tofa, Garum Mallam, Kiru, Kumbotso, Minjibir, Nasarawa, Rano, Tarauni, Tsanyawa, Tudun Wada, Ungogo, and Wudil.

The intervention adopts a human-centered design approach, working alongside sub-national governments to co-create and implement Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) strategies that promote demand for vaccines. Through these community-based outreach efforts, TAConnect has conducted more than 2,522 immunization sessions, reaching over 49,000 previously unreached children with essential, life-saving vaccines. The intervention has played a crucial role in accelerating the uptake of the Rotavirus vaccine among children under two years of age.
TAConnect also leveraged the co-administration of other critical antigens such as Pentavalent and Measles vaccines to deliver a comprehensive immunization package. These efforts significantly boosted coverage, with 55% of the target population reached through community outreaches alone. Additionally, these sessions accounted for a substantial share of vaccines delivered across the 90 participating health facilities.
Beyond immunization, TAConnect’s intervention integrates health promotion initiatives that are grounded in real-time data and guided by human-centered design principles. These initiatives include targeted messaging and services on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), nutrition, and family planning, equipping caregivers with both knowledge and access to vital health services.
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in marking the close of World Immunization Week, TAConnect remains steadfast in its commitment to building inclusive, sustainable, and responsive health systems. Its ongoing work in Kano stands as a powerful example of how strategic partnerships, community-driven approaches, and data-informed solutions can work together to ensure that no child is left behind on the path to universal immunization.
