TAConnect Joins Stakeholders in Designing Context-Specific Interventions to Address Maternal Mortality in Nigeria

TAConnect joined key stakeholders in Nigeria’s health sector at the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) implementation design workshop from January 27th to 31st to support the Federal Government and Kano State in designing targeted interventions to reduce maternal mortality in Nigeria.

MAMII was announced by the coordinating minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, during the Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review of the health sector in November 2024, with an expectation to roll out in 50% of the 172 priority LGAs contributing 55% of the maternal death burden in the country by December 2025.

The five-day workshop was held for Kano State, which was prioritized due to its high burden of maternal mortality, large population, and healthcare access challenges. In attendance were representatives from federal institutions, the Kano State Ministry of Health, the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, other MDAs, development partners, and experts from neighboring states including Katsina, Jigawa, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, and Ogun State.

The groundbreaking initiative provided a platform for in-depth brainstorming and strategic planning, focusing on understanding the MAMII concept, analyzing the root causes of maternal and neonatal mortality in Kano, and designing tailored interventions and strategies across five domains: Community Programming and Innovation; Access; Health Facility Programming and Innovation; Data, Leadership, and Governance; and Enablers for Health Systems Performance, all aligning with the principles of the Sector-Wide Approach.

The interventions were harmonized into an implementation plan for the state, clearly highlighting prioritized interventions to reduce maternal mortality. The state government reaffirmed its commitment to initiating the rollout and scale of MAMII interventions while coordinating and working closely with stakeholders.

As a key partner, TAConnect remains committed to supporting the Kano State government in its endeavor to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in Nigeria.
